Walter Keane Big Eyes Hand Signed 1962 Print “Rejected” Margaret Lithograph Original

KeaneFeaturing an original lithograph of Walter Keane’s oil painting “Rejected”, published by Tomorrow’s Master Series, Japan in 1962.  One of the iconic mid-century images of vulnerable waifs with enormous eyes. Hand signed in ink under the image, as well as inside the print by Walter, but the recent movie BIG EYES suggests that most of his works were actually done by his wife Margaret. Interesting part of art history!
Details:

  • Image size 11-1/4″ x 5-1/2″, paper overall size 14-1/4″ x 11-7/8″.
  • Image is intact and excellent color; the page itself has some ripples which will be smoothed out when framed under glass.
  • Part of a group of Keane art we obtained, all of them were stored in a way that the lower right corners are creased in the wide margin, and the page itself needs to be smoothed down. When matted and framed, this will present very well.

This and other Keane’s can be found in our eBay Store Connectibles.

A Little Background on Howdy Doody – My favorite TV show as a child

Howdy.BobHowdy Doody is an American children’s television program (with circus and Western frontier themes) that was created and produced by E. Roger Muir and telecast on the NBC network in the United States from December 27, 1947 until September 24, 1960. It was a pioneer in children’s television programming and set the pattern for many similar shows. One of the first television series produced at NBC in Rockefeller Center, in Studio 3A, it was also a pioneer in early color production as NBC (at the time owned by TV maker RCA) used the show in part to sell color television sets in the 1950s.

The character first came to life from the creative mind of Bob Smith, who created Howdy Doody during his days as a radio announcer on WNBC. At that time, Howdy Doody was only a voice Smith performed on the radio. When Smith made an appearance on NBC’s television program Puppet Playhouse on December 27, 1947, the reception for the character was great enough to begin a demand for a visual character for television. Frank Paris, a puppeteer whose puppets appeared on the program, was asked to create a Howdy Doody puppet.

As both the character and television program grew in popularity, demand for Howdy Doody related merchandise began to surface. By 1948, toymakers and department stores had been approached with requests for Howdy Doody dolls and similar items. Macy’s department store contacted Frank Paris, the creator of the puppet, to ask about rights for a Howdy Doody doll. While Paris had created the puppet, it was Bob Smith who owned the rights to the Howdy Doody character; an argument ensued between the two men, as Paris felt he was being cheated out of any financial benefits from having made the puppet. After one such disagreement, Paris took the Howdy Doody puppet and angrily left the NBC studios with it about four hours before the show was to air live; it was not the first time Paris had taken his puppet and left, leaving the live television program with no “star”.

Cissette by Madame Alexander (1957-63)

This brief article below was taken from the wonderful Blog – vintagedollcollector.com written by Zendelle Bouchard.  I hope you enjoy….

Cissette arrived two years after Cissy as the smaller, cuter and more affordable version of Alexander’s popular glamour doll. The same mold was also used for other dolls during the Cissette period, including Sleeping Beauty (identifiable by her flat feet), Margot (with heavy eye makeup and upswept hair) and Jacqueline (heavy eye makeup and sidepart hairstyle). The mold continued to be used for the Portrette series and other dolls in the ’60s, and is still in use today. Cissette was reintroduced for collectors in the late ’90s.

Body Construction
Cissette is all hard plastic, jointed at the neck, shoulders, hips and knees, with high heel feet. She has sleep eyes with molded lashes, with painted lashes underneath, one-stroke eyebrows, and pierced ears. Her synthetic wig is styled in a curly flip with bangs, and was available in blonde, brunette or redhead. A few fancy dressed dolls came with upswept hairdos. A rare version of Cissette from the early ’60s had a bald head with interchangeable wigs.

Identifying Cissette
Trying to date a Cissette doll can be challenging. Here are some clues:
Eyelids: 1957 dolls have beige eyelids, in 1958 they were pale pink and thereafter were peach.
Wigs: 1957 and ’58 wigs were made with three rows of stitching; after that they used zigzag stitching. A few fancy wigs had three rows on some later dolls.
Fingernails: had polish starting sometime in 1961.
Eye weights: dolls from 1957 and part of ’58 had heavy weights on their sleep eyes. Smaller weights were used thereafter.
Clothing: Dresses in 1957 and ’58 had bodice darts; in 1959, they did not. Thereafter bodice darts were only used for evening wear.
