WPA history Graphic Art PRINT Division Limited Editions

After the crash of 1929 and the Depression that followed, 25% of the nation’s work force was unemployed. The Works Progress Administration/Federal Arts Project (known as WPA / FAP) was formed in 1935 as a work-relief program for artists who were admitted after establishing financial need and displaying artistic ability. In the 8 years of it’s existence, 1935-1943 when the program ended due to WW II, 5,000 muralists, painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers and poster designers were provided a wage.

The Graphic Arts Division was established for printmakers and provided an extraordinary opportunity for creating a body of accessible, affordable public art limited edition prints that reflected the social mission to improve and change conditions. Subjects chosen for the work included typical scenes from American daily life, both rural and urban, as well as industrial scenes that have become icons of the era. Some worked with realism, others worked in styles of Cubism & Surrealism. Photos below show some of the rich and varied prints from the New York City Graphic Arts collection that we can offer.

Regardless of style, each print was only produced in LIMITED EDITIONS of up to 25 per image. Some prints are signed and stamped, some are not, but all that we present on EBAY have been authenticated and documented as original. The program ended in 1943 with our entry into the war, as the defense industry employed so many American Workers that unemployment was virtually a thing of the past. The WPA, which was no longer needed, ended.

Many of the prints at that time were destroyed or sold as scrap material. Some collections were fortunately saved by far-sighted private collectors and provide a fascinating look at a most unique time in our nation’s history.  A variety of WPA prints are available in the connectibles store.

WPA Museum Extension Project Print CHARLES II Framed

We’re selling some interesting original authentic Works Project Administration WPA art from the 1930’s. This print from the MUSEUM EXTENSION PROJECT, which was a section that was created to help public schools obtain visual education aids designed to give “life and reality to the things children study.”

The print depicts the historical costumes titled CHARLES II – LOUIS XIV, 1660 AD to 1715 AD. Plate No 58 from the series.

The print particulars are:

  • It is matted and framed under glass. Glass was highly reflective making photography difficult; any shading you see is from reflection, NOT on print!
  • Visible print size measures 18″ x 24″, total size framed is 26″ x 32″.

Check out other WPA works of art in our connectibles store.

Pelham Puppet 1960’s WIZARD Made in England

New Year’s day is always a great day for searching out unique collectibles at the many auctions in the Northeast.  It has become a tradition, to hold large auctions on New Year’s Day.  For example, the white suit worn by John Lennon on the Beetles‘ “Abbey Road” album cover sold at a Norwalk, Connecticut auction for $46,000.  Take a look, very exciting!.

That purchase was a little out of our league, however we were able to acquire an interesting collection of vintage puppets, fresh from a wonderful local collection. Pictured here is an original authentic 1960’s PELHAM PUPPETS SL20 WIZARD in the original box.

  • Excellent 12″ version, molded head, elaborate costume and details.
  • EXCELLENT condition, shown as found in box. I’m not sure it was ever used, possibly was just on display.
  • Box has printed instructions on sides explaining how to take out and return puppet to box.
  • TERRIFIC addition to any display, wonderful design.

Please take a look at the rest of this wonderful collection at connectibles.

Singer FEATHERWEIGHT 221 Sewing Machine 1947

We’re always excited when we find a Singer FEATHERWEIGHT Sewing Machine, as we know how much they are loved! These are very popular with quilters; they are pretty light to carry and a great machine to take “on location”. Pictured to the left is a classic 221 in a VERY nice case, which is more compact and easier to carry than others. Plate number AH 345118, with production date of Oct 28, 1947.

Starts easily and appears to run smoothly, but all I did was turn it on, as I am not a quilter or seamstress. The condition outside is overall EXCELLENT, with some light marks or scratches to the glossy finish. Medallion gold is sharp & crisp.

ORIGINAL Striated plate is excellent. The original pedal is in excellent condition as well. The carrying case is in excellent condition as well, with no oil odor at all —cleaner than most you find. More compact than many others, measures 13″ x 8″ x 12″.

LOTS of accessories, including an instruction booklet (dated 1955), an attachments box, and motor lubricant, all in excellent condition in their own boxes.  Available at connectibles.

WPA Limited Edition signed Print GYULA ZILZER Milking Goat 1936 NYC

Pictured here is one of our great WPA prints, which are pretty exceptional. These are guaranteed authentic 1930s works of art, NOT modern reproductions. All are from the New York City Graphic Arts Division and provide a unique opportunity to own both a striking work of art AND an actual piece of United States “history.”

The featured print is a signed ORIGINAL 1936 etching print by artist GY ZILZER (1898-1969) titled “Milking.”  Signed, inscribed, dated 1936, stamped with Federal Art Project NYC WPA stamp on lower center. TERRIFIC lines, crisp image.

Gyula Zilzer, born in Hungary, studied with Hans Hoffman in Paris. After working in the Federal Arts Project in New York City, Zilzer moved to California, where he became an illustrator & eventually contributed to numerous films. His work has been featured in many international art shows & awards. It is included in the collections of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, the British Museum, and the New York Public Library.

PRINT Details are:

  • Image size approx 9″ x 12″; overall paper size is 16″ x 11″.
  • Signed, dated & inscribed by Ida Abelman, graphite bottom right &  bottom left. Print is #24 in the edition.
  • Image is rich & excellent, and fine impression on cream paper.

These WPA prints were issued in small editions of up to 25; artists in the WPA program were allowed to produce only that number of each print, and many were carelessly destroyed when the program ended as we entered World War II. Due to the minimal number of existing prints, you are unlikely to find this image again easily. A variety of WPA Prints are available at connectibles.

Vintage Women’s PLATTER HAT Velvet B/W 50’s

We recently found a wonderful group of vintage men’s and Women’s hats, fresh from a local collector. Perfect for those who LOVE the show “MAD MEN” as much as we do! Don & Betty Draper’s styles, ready for YOU. It can use some airing after being in storage for decades. This hat is my personal favorite from this group! A striking platter hat, black velvet and white soft & fuzzy (beaver felt, angora?) alternating panels. Lack velvet clip, dramatic style!

Companion Dolls – Patti Playpal

In 1959, a NEW and unique design of doll was offered to lucky girls – “life-size” was the defining new concept for COMPANION dolls. Whether a 23″ baby, a 28″ toddler, or a 35″ doll, the size of a 3-year-old, all are the actual size of their real-life counterparts. Most homes could only fit ONE of these dolls at best, so they were treasured.
The standard was set by Ideal with its PATTI PLAYPAL line, although many other brands, including Betsy McCall, also offer similar products. The fun of owning companion dolls is that they can be redressed in clothing from any children’s store, so you can personalize them with an incredible variety. Patti Playpal wears approximately a size 3T, and many collectors enjoy dressing them for special holidays – picture her standing next to your family Christmas Tree, or in a Halloween costume next to your display!
Starting or adding to a collection is relatively easy —there is a wide variety of hairstyles, some considered rare. Outfits, accessories, and brands offer endless variation. Our 5 granddaughters are fascinated by life-size dolls because they can really be a “sister” or friend in their creative play, leading to wonderfully imaginative stories. Adult collectors are fascinated by the delight of stumbling across a NEW hairstyle or color they’ve discovered. Mostly, they just make us smile with delight!
