Singer FEATHERWEIGHT 221 Sewing Machine 1947

We’re always excited when we find a Singer FEATHERWEIGHT Sewing Machine, as we know how much they are loved! These are very popular with quilters; they are pretty light to carry and a great machine to take “on location”. Pictured to the left is a classic 221 in a VERY nice case, which is more compact and easier to carry than others. Plate number AH 345118, with production date of Oct 28, 1947.

Starts easily and appears to run smoothly, but all I did was turn it on, as I am not a quilter or seamstress. The condition outside is overall EXCELLENT, with some light marks or scratches to the glossy finish. Medallion gold is sharp & crisp.

ORIGINAL Striated plate is excellent. The original pedal is in excellent condition as well. The carrying case is in excellent condition as well, with no oil odor at all —cleaner than most you find. More compact than many others, measures 13″ x 8″ x 12″.

LOTS of accessories, including an instruction booklet (dated 1955), an attachments box, and motor lubricant, all in excellent condition in their own boxes.  Available at connectibles.

A Brief History of Halloween

Over 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, began a haunting tradition. November 1st was considered New Year’s Day for the Celts, and they also celebrated the day before. On October 31st (or Samhain), the worlds of the dead and the living became one as the dead returned to earth, and the Celtic priests announced predictions about the future.

To celebrate this day, Celts wore costumes and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. However, when the Romans conquered this territory, the Roman holiday of Feralia (a holiday commemorating the dead) was combined with the Celtic Samhain. After the Romans, Christian influence changed the celebration once again. Pope Boniface IV declared November 1st All Saints’ Day to honor saints and martyrs, apparently in an attempt to replace Samhain.

All Saint’s Day was also referred to as All-hallows, or All-hallowmas from the Middle English term for All Saint’s Day. Eventually, the eve of this day was called All-hallows Eve, a name that would one day turn into Halloween. Eventually, All Souls’ Day was added on November 2nd, and the three days together became known as Hallowmas.

When Europeans came to America, they brought their Halloween traditions along. These traditions came together with the celebrations of American Indians and other ethnic groups, creating a uniquely American version of the holiday. Early celebrations were usually public events full of dancing, singing
, and storytelling.

Late-19th-century immigrants brought new twists to the Halloween tradition. These immigrants began dressing up on Halloween and going house to house asking for much-needed food or money, which eventually evolved into modern-day trick-or-treating. The Irish brought along jack-o-lanterns, which originated as coals or small candles placed inside turnips to ward off evil spirits. Once the Irish discovered that the pumpkins were easier to carve, the tradition began.

By the 1920s and 30s, Halloween became a community celebration with parades and parties. However, vandalism also became increasingly popular. In the 1950s, Halloween celebrations moved from the community to the classroom, and the popular tradition of trick-or-treating began to take hold, with candy used to bribe vandals to stop performing “tricks.”

Witches became associated with Halloween due to a European belief that witches would gather each year to celebrate and worship the devil. It was also believed that if one wanted to meet a witch, he should wear his clothes inside-out and walk backward on Halloween night, and a witch would appear at midnight!

Antique Victorian Sea SHELL Art Mirror DRESSER Sailors

We’re delighted to have found an outstanding collection of antique Victorian seashell art, discovered while treasure-hunting on Martha’s Vineyard. If you love decorating with vintage “beach” memorabilia, these are one of the nicest additions you can add to your decor.

From a charming turn-of-the-19th-century seaside “Gingerbread cottage”, these gems are now available to be shared & admired again. These are the nicest we’ve ever offered in terms of condition, assortment, and design. Similar to “Sailor’s Valentines”, outstanding detail and patience are required for these one-of-a-kind hand-made pieces dating from the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Features here are one of the highlights of the collection. A miniature “dresser” complete with a mirror, “faux bois” painted sides, and elaborately decorated. Remarkable detail down to the mock drawers & faux brass handles. An artist over 100 years ago took great care with the placement of the miniature shells and the overall artistic designs. Intricate pattern. This is a very special piece, especially with the details of the drawers (don’t open, faux design). Excellent addition to a serious collection & display. Available at Connectibles.

WPA LE signed Prints Jacob Kainen & Saul Kovner

We are featuring a group of WPA Prints that are pretty exceptional. From our own personal MUSEUM quality collection, we are downsizing and able to offer a select group of these historical works of art. These are guaranteed authentic 1930s works of art, NOT modern reproductions. All are from the New York City Graphic Arts Division and provide a unique opportunity to own both a striking work of art AND an actual piece of United States “history.”

Two are pictured here, one a SIGNED ORIGINAL 1940s lithograph print by artist SAUL KOVNER (American 1904-1982) titled “Skaters, Crotona Park.”  Terrific winter scene of the famous Bronx, New York park. Signed, inscribed in graphite center & lower right. For an extra whimsical touch, SAUL included his name & date on a sign IN the actual print. The other is a SIGNED ORIGINAL 1930s lithograph print by artist JACOB KAINEN (American 1909-2001) titled “CONVALESCENT.”   Signed and titled, Federal Art Project NYC WPA stamp on lower left.

Jacob Kainen worked for the NYC FAP from 1935 to 1942. He became a print-maker, curator of the Smithsonian’s collection of graphic arts, and a collector of prints, particularly those of German expressionists. During the 1930s, he became a social realist & influential member of the NY Graphics Arts division. After WWII, he moved to the Washington, DC area & assumed a leadership role in the arts community. Later work became primarily abstract.
