Beyond the Buy: The History and Human Desire to Collect

Effanbee F&B 15″ Vtg Gumdrop Doll 1960s Russian Folk

Collecting is a fundamental human activity that stretches back to ancient civilizations, where objects were gathered not just for practical use, but for their aesthetic, historical, or symbolic value. From the curiosity cabinets, or Wunderkammern, of the Renaissance—which housed diverse assortments of art, relics, and natural specimens—to the modern passion for themed sets like collectible cards or contemporary art, the act of acquisition has always been tied to status, knowledge, and personal narrative. Historically, these private collections laid the groundwork for modern public museums and libraries, transitioning the desire for possession into a communal

appreciation of heritage and beauty.

At its core, collecting is driven by a powerful psychological urge, often combining the thrill of the hunt with the satisfaction of bringing order to chaos. For many, a collection represents mastery over a specific niche—a complete run of mid-century modern glassware, or a highly sought-after series of vintage comic books. Each new acquisition provides a hit of dopamine, reinforcing the habit. Moreover, a collection is an external representation of the collector’s identity, history, and taste, creating a tangible legacy that can be shared, displayed, and passed down. This blend of historical significance, personal passion, and mental reward is what makes the world of collecting—whether for profit or pleasure—so enduring.

Three F&B Dolls
11″ Effanbee Dolls

Part of a large collection of vintage F&B dolls, fresh from a local estate where they were carefully stored and displayed. Here is a set of three vintage 1960s F&B Effanbee Mickey dolls, each with the desirable molded baseball cap head variation. We think they look wonderful when posed and displayed together! Initially, these dolls were sold in baseball uniforms, but all three have since been redressed.

While the clothing is replaced, each doll retains Mickey’s original charm with his freckled cheeks, playful grin, and glancing eyes (right or left, depending on doll). Vinyl bodies remain in nice condition with normal light wear from age.

Sawyer’s Vtg View Master Personal Stereo Camera f3.5/25mm lenses 35mm Film Case

Sawyer’s Vtg View-Master Personal Stereo Camera f3.5/25mm lenses 35mm Film with Original Case. They were made in Portland, Oregon, between 1952 and 1955. The View-Master Personal Stereo Camera shoots 14mm x 12mm stereoscopic images on regular 35mm film for use in View-Master slides, slide viewers, and projectors. The circular View-Master slides and their red viewers were popular among children throughout the second half of the 20th century. They are still being produced today with preloaded images such as cartoons or far-away travel destinations. The idea behind the View-Master Personal Stereo Camera was to make your own images which could then be punched out and inserted into blank slides for viewing your own stereoscopic photos. A second View-Master camera was introduced in 1962, but production of that model ended shortly after that. The use of these cameras remained popular throughout the next several decades, with blank slides staying in production until the early 1990s. This is a collector’s item and has not been tested. #eBay #eBaySeller #ViewMasterStereocraft #Sawyers #viewmaster
